The buzz word in the beauty industry and a title eliciting products that have come from the earth. But what exactly does 'clean' or 'green' beauty mean, and are products label as thus actually good for you?
First off brands using the terms 'green', 'natural' and 'organic' does not make their product so. In more recent years, natural and organic products, unfortunately, have become more of a marketing term than a point of difference.
These terms are not thoroughly regulated in the industry which means you can buy products that are deemed 'natural' or 'organic' by the company that produces them but still contain harmful ingredients that are not at all natural.
Consumers need to be educated on ingredients that they should be avoided in each beauty category (i.e. ingredients that should be avoided in sunscreen rarely show up in your nightly moisturiser or foundation). This way they can hold brands accountable for not being natural or organic when they say they are and also, more importantly, means consumers knowingly using beauty products that can prevent skin from functioning as it should.
Our definition of green is non-toxic and nourishing for the skin and body as well as aiding in keeping it healthy and giving it what it needs.
There are specific ingredients that are commonly used in commercial skincare that your skin cannot thrive when being subjected to, and for us, Green Beauty does not include these ingredients.
Ingredients you should absolutely avoid in each Beauty Category are...
Oxybenzone in sunscreen – When this is washed away from your skin in the ocean, it will bleach coral reefs white and create a formidable living environment for algae, resulting in the reefing dying out
Aluminium in deodorants – Not only does aluminium clog your pores and prevent you from sweating naturally, is a significant cause for a variety of health issues, including breast cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and kidney failure.
Lead in lipsticks – Lead has carcinogenic properties which are proven to have cancer-causing effects. Enough said.
Silicones in makeup – Silicone prevents your skin from functioning correctly by trapping debris in your pores causing congestion and acne. It also slows down the production of skin renewal (generally taking 28 days) decelerating the improvement of the condition of your skin.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in cleansers/body washes – Aside from being a known skin irritant, it is also exceptionally bad for our environment. It emits toxic fumes when heated, has corrosive properties and can aid in helping other chemicals into your body (as it's a penetration enhancer)
Formaldehyde in nail polish - Exposure to larger doses of formaldehyde in the air or on the skin may cause cancer of the throat, nose, and blood. Repeated exposure can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs and potentially cause abnormal fetal development in pregnant women.
Parabens in skin care - Parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body’s cells, and while estrogenic activity is associated with certain forms of breast cancer, parabens have been found present in breast tumors.
Aside from an ingredient aspect, Green Beauty in our eyes encompasses being eco-conscious and minimalising the impact on our environment.
That means sourcing ingredients locally, it means not testing products on animals and it means using recyclable or biodegradable packaging so that the product packaging has no harmful or lasting effect on the health of our planet.
Because for us, yes using incredible, nourishing, active ingredients is important for skin health and rejuvenation (as well as body health), but if you're concurrently destroying the environment then it's not Green.
We are proud to align ourselves with brands that embody these values and the result is the products that we sell in New Zealand.
